Based on what you have read thus far, you should have a much better understanding of both what coaching is and how it works. However some people still get a bit confused as to the difference between Coaching and Therapy and other related professions.

Therapy
Unlike traditional therapy, the main focus of coaching is not on “healing emotional wounds” from childhood or a catastrophic life event. Coaching places emphasis on learning from the past only as it pertains to present challenges and future goals. Simply stated, therapy brings someone from a situation of dysfunction to a functional state. Coaching transforms someone from a functional state to an optimal state.

Consulting
Consultants are generally hired to use their expertise to “fix “problems, or offer solutions in a specific field and/or industry. Coaches, rather than giving advice or answers, help the client to access the answers from within, hold them accountable for their desired actions and then support them throughout the change management process.

Mentoring
Mentoring generally is described by the process in which a mature and more experienced individual shares their wisdom and experience with a “younger” mentee. Coaches do not use their own experiences as a model for the client’s success, but rather honor the individuality of every journey, and empower the client to follow their own unique path.

Many people assume coaching is only about motivation. Although it is a component, as a coach, you want to know ‘Why you do what you do?’ Not 10-15 years ago, but, ‘What motivates you today?’ Coaching can help you get to where you want to be, by gaining clarity on this core drive.
